Cycling shoes are clip-in (also known as cleats or studs ) shoes that attach to bike pedals. And, like there are multiple styles of cycling sports, there are different types of cycling shoes. So, what you practice will determine the type of clip-in shoes and pedals you will need.
Note that, bicycle pedals for clip-on shoes are called clipless pedals to differentiate them from straps/ toe clip pedals and they are different for on and off-road cycling. SPD clipless pedals are great for either on or off-road while SPD-SL pedals are only for road cycling.
Many cyclists tend to buy cycling shoes before pedals; this can be a huge mistake if you can’t differentiate pedals for on and off-road cycling or have no idea what you need. Keep in mind that if you’re a road cyclist, you will need road-specific pedals and shoes. So, it’s best to seek help at your local bike shop with pros that can show you the difference with their products.
Benefits of clip-in shoes
Clip-in shoes will help set your seat height at the right angle and allow your legs to stay at a precise degree to prevent knee and hip injuries during your bike rides. They will also stop your feet from moving and slipping, make cycling relaxing, improve pedaling, and provide a more efficient bike ride.
Clip-in shoes, to use or not to use? The answer depends on what type of cyclist you are. Are you using the bike once in a while or more than three times a week? To make it clear, you can benefit from using clip-in shoes if you’re an active person and your bike is part of your weekly workout. So, if that’s the case and you’re not using them, you should consider them.
Tips for beginners
If you have no experience, clipping into your pedals can be easy but, clipping out is not and, this can be the root cause of a bike crash. First-timers with cleats need to learn and practice the art of clipping in and off the bike pedals before going cycling with them. You can always search on Youtube how to use clipless pedals and cleats to see how they work.
Spin bikes and trainers are ideal to practice clipping in and out without crashing. And, whether you had practice or not clipping in and off your bike pedals with your cleats, make sure you find a wide area free of traffic, cars, objects, and people to practice riding your bike with cleats on before going on long rides or heading to the trails. Even cyclists with long years of experience tend to have trouble adjusting to new cleats whenever they change them.
