Do you think riding a bike and cycling is the same thing? Well, just like anyone can be active and not do sports, or be an athlete, anyone can ride a bike and not be cycling. For example, people can walk in a mall, run errands, use the stairs instead of the elevators; those are things that make them active but, none of those things are a sport. Other people run, walk, go to the gym, or do spinning; they are also active but, that doesn’t mean they are athletes. Athletes are the ones that have skills and put effort, time, dedication, and goals into the sport they practice whether they want to compete with others or not.
People can ride a bike just for fun, every once in a while or, probably two times a year, on the weekends; in that case, it’s recreation or a hobby. People that commute on bikes put more time into riding a bike, but there’s not much goal achievement or effort in practice; it’s a need. And, when the level of time, effort, training, skills, and goal setting is much higher, it matter’s to make a difference between riding a bike and cycling because we treat it as a sport. However, no matter if you ride your bike every now and then, commute, or go cycling every week… make sure to enjoy your ride!
