Today, an MTB adventure in Malibu because some days we want to ride the bike, but we also want a change of scenery. I found the Point Mugu State Park close by, so I decided to explore it. Riding along the PCH, I noticed this is a popular place among MTB enthusiasts since you can see many of them between La Jolla and Sycamore Campsites. In both campsites, you find tracks that connect to the Sycamore Canyon trail. The Sycamore Canyon trail is the main trail in Point Mugu State Park that takes you to Rancho Sierra Vista in its north region.

The Big Sycamore trailhead is an ideal trail for all MTB skill level cyclists. The track is wide, clean, and about 15 miles long, but you will always find other cyclists, hikers, and even horses on it, so you need to be mindful of the Park rules; and, the use of bells is a must.

The Point Mugu State Park has a campsite for tents and RV’s. And different amenities like restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and beach access. The scenery is beautiful everywhere. Dogs are not allowed on the backcountry trails and dirt roads. You’ll most likely encounter bobcats, snakes, squirrels, and deers on the way; but, wildlife in the Park also include mountain lions, foxes, skunks, and others.

There are multiple trails for more skilled MTB cyclists in the park that promotes a lot of fun. And, the Sycamore Canyon is great for kids; however, if you plan to take them to Rancho Sierra, bring plenty of water and let them take breaks. En route to Rancho Sierra from Malibu, close to Danielson Fire Road, the road is very steep. In this area, you need to watch for cars and stop for horses. So, you need to be extra careful on your way down from Rancho Sierra.

It’s always logical to do research, check the weather, and be ready when exploring a new place. You can easily get lost, and the phone signal is limited. Plus, you need to use caution when visiting in hot temperatures due to fire dangers.
