Malibu is not just an extraordinary spot for vacationing and surfing but, also one of cyclists’ favorite because here, your choices of riding are endless. Everyone knows Malibu has an amazing pacific ocean view with incredible ocean waves, and stunning homes but, it also has breathtaking canyon roads with amazing curves and hills that’d make your ride an incredible workout. Not to mention the many adventure trails around the mountains and national parks in the area.

Malibu hills can be intense

Riding on the PCH you’ll find a bike lane to each side in most of the Malibu area. The traffic can be heavy especially over the weekends and mostly towards the pier area. If you like to ride in the mornings and you’re headed to Malibu, expect dense foggy mornings, especially on dry season, so be prepared; it usually clears out in the afternoon. Sometimes the wind can be over 20mph so it’s best to check ahead of time.

If you’re not accustomed to climbing, like me, there are many spots everywhere in California that’ll help you get used to it, and there are many hills in Malibu, so far, from Zuma Beach towards the Malibu Pier found one, which is probably the toughest climb of all. I still have a side of Malibu pending for a ride, from the pier towards Santa Monica, so I’m not 100% sure of that, however, most of them have very rewarding views, and the downhills are always fun and speedy; you’ll just have to be conscious that there are traffic lights at the end of some of them.

You’ll always find some roads within the PCH that lead to canyon roads that are very challenging, perfect for pro cyclists to explore. Parking is available alongside the PCH in designated areas, and there’s plenty of spots for coastal access if you like to sit by the beach or jump in the chilly water for a break. And despite the fog and wind that can even be chilly during the summer, California is, for the most part, sunny and makes it enjoyable to ride outdoors, so get out and explore it!
