Never stop exploring!

Chesapeake, VA
The Dismal Swamp Canal Trail was one of my favorite places to go cycling in Chesapeake, VA. The trail is nearly nine miles long, each way which, is terrific for outdoor recreation. The paved trail is always slightly active with people walking, running, or cycling. You’ll often find cyclists getting their miles in, no matter the weather, time, and day. The park has decent facilities in the parking lot, and halfway on the trail.
It’s common to encounter snakes, black bears, otters, and varied wildlife in the area; after all, it’s a wildlife refuge. I had no idea about black bears on the trail until after I arrived and rode half the trail; you can easily be distracted by the foliage and the view of the swamp. But, you don’t need to worry much about the bear encounters since they humans probably more than the other way around.

The Swamp

The swamp holds one of the two natural freshwater lakes in Virginia, called Lake Drummond, which is beautiful.
In Spring, it’s common to see more snakes and lots of dragonflies on the trail; it can be annoying. The summer is Chesapeake is very humid, and the bugs go crazy, so you have bug spray available. My favorite season in VA was autumn. The weather and the scenery during the fall are more pleasant and stunning. During the winter, with the proper gear, you can ride safely, when there’s no snowfall.
The Dismal Swamp Canal Welcome Center in North Carolina has a path that is perfect for mountain biking. The center offers recreational activities like canoeing, bird watching, hiking, and more. Also, a beautiful trail next to its parking lot outside is perfect for road cyclists to discover South Mills.
